Stop Suffering From Closet-Phobia
7 Steps to Organizing Your Closet
Written by Organized Interiors

I always find it surprising that people spend so much time and money on their home, but when it comes to their closet they give it so little thought and energy. A well-organized closet system can actually double a closet's capacity. It will also, obviously keep your clothes, accessories, shoes, and whatever else you put away organized so that you're able to find exactly what you need when you need it. So with that in mind, here are seven tips to help you get the most out of your closet space.

Purge and binge. Okay, so it doesn't paint a pretty picture but it does get straight to the point. Take a serious look at what's in your closet and if you find anything that you haven't worn in a couple of seasons, toss them. Be ruthless!

Everyone has needs. When designing the 'perfect', efficient closet, consider what you primarily use your closet for and then ask yourself what needs to be the most accessible? That's especially important so you don't have to go digging for items you use on a regular basis. Also, remember that what works well for you won't always work well for someone else.

What's in your drawers? Multiple stacked slim drawers are much more efficient and make better use of valuable space. It's also a great way to store without overcrowding. Use the deeper drawers for bulkier clothing and blankets.

Shelves, hooks and rods. When planning your closet, consider the following: use long hanging sections for dresses and coats; double hanging sections for shirts, jackets and folded pants; and triple hanging sections for kids' clothes.

Room to move. If you have a spare room in your home that's not being put to good use then maybe its time to consider creating the walk-in closet of your dreams. Consider it to be a personal space that helps prepare you for each and every day in style.

Extra, extra.  Certain add-ons, such as belt/tie racks, removable laundry bins, and extension baskets can be very effective closet helpers, allowing for easy access and improved visibility.

Custom or pre-fab. Most people would love to have a custom-built dream closet. And it's true that a custom-built closet with cornice moulding and frosted glass doors create a spectacular space. However, budget plays a big roll in that option. Modular closet systems are definitely more cost effective – though space restrictions such as an odd shaped area may limit your choices. Of course, personal requirements, and style also come into play.
