A memorable centrepiece should be the heart of every festive table. There's no better way to set the stage for a memorable meal. And if you can bring in elements from the season itself, that's even better. So here's a uniquely cool idea that allows you to bring a very seasonal quality into your home and centre stage.

It just wouldn't be the holidays without bringing a touch of that winter wonderland inside. Here's an easy to make centrepiece idea that's perfect for "breaking the ice" at your next holiday party. The final result will be a decorative bowl made entirely of ice, perfect for the festive season.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Water (use distilled for a clearer finish)
  • Cranberries and evergreen clippings
  • Metal or plastic bowls
  • Masking tape
  • Rocks

Directions:

  1. Fill a large bowl with about 3 cm of water and a few scattered cranberries.

  2. Freeze

  3. Place smaller bowl on ice inside larger bowl and then centre and secure small bowl with masking tape (from the inner rim of the smaller bowl to the outer rim of the larger bowl – 4 pieces of tape should do).

  4. Add cranberries and small cuttings of evergreen between the bowls and add another 3 cm (or more) of water.

  5. Freeze again – the thin ice acts as a glue to hold the design in place.

  6. Continue adding water and evergreen pieces until you've reached the rims of the two bowls (depending on the size of the bowls you've used this could take 3 or 4 freezing stages.

  7. Once the complete ice bowl is frozen, place the outer form in warm water until it slips out of its double bowl forms.

  8. Set the finished ice bowl on a decorated platter to prevent drips. Place candle in the centre and surround with lemon leaves, holly and pinecones.
