Have A Green Old Time
Ways To Entertain In An Environmentally Friendly Way

Entertaining in an environmentally friendly way – where you take the planet into as much consideration as your guests – doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it really couldn’t be easier.

For starters, instead of disposables, consider using real plates and glasses – even if they don’t match. In fact, a unique array of dish and glassware can enhance your get-together.

Of course, it’s what goes on those plates that really make the impression. A couple of days before the event, visit your local farmer’s market (which are becoming more and more popular) and start deciding on your menu based on the locally grown produce you see available. And to fill up those glasses, try and select some locally made juice, wine or brewed beer.

Be aware of everything you buy – the less items packaged in paper or plastic, the better. You can even take along a reusable grocery bag or two to use so you can leave all those plastic bags behind.

Finally, compost. One simple action that does so much good. And even if you don’t garden yourself, you can always offer it to a neighbour who does.

When the party ends, you can clean up without using harmful chemical based cleaners. By combining some recognizable household items you’ll be able to create the following eco-friendly and kitchen-focused cleaners that get the job done in a much greener fashion.

Furniture polish
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup vinegar
2 tsp lemon juice

Mix in a spray bottle. Spray liberally on wood surfaces and wipe dry.

Drain Opener
1-1/2 cups vinegar
2 tbsp baking soda

Pour the ingredients into the clogged drain. Wait 5 minutes and turn on the hot water. Repeat if necessary.

Polishing silver
Line a glass pan or pot with tinfoil. Add a tablespoon or two of baking soda and salt. Pour in boiling water. Leave silverware to soak. Polish with toothpaste and rinse.

Glass Cleaner
1 part vinegar
1 part rubbing alcohol
1 part water

Mix in a spray bottle and use to clean windows, and surfaces like glass, chrome, stainless steel and tile.
